87001 RUG 12/08/04
My reason to be in Rugby on 12th August 2004 was to capture some final shots of class 87s at work with Virgin trains. Due to finish in June 2005, the last working was eventually in December 2006. 87001, the prototype, entered traffic in June 1973. It was named 'Stephenson', then 'Royal Scot'. For the final period in traffic with Virgin Trains it was repainted blue and renamed 'Stephenson'. It was subsequently preserved as part of the National Collection. As a youngster spotting in the North West during the 1980s, I have a soft spot for the class. They were, at that time, the crack West Coast motive-power.
