CLASS 100: 40 DMBS-DTCL 2-car sets built by the Gloucester Carriage and Wagon Company became class 100. 53355, seen here as set N699 at Preston on 12th November 1988 was the last survivor by virtue of having had asbestos insulation removed. It was paired with the last surviving Cravens class 105. Most of the class 100s were new to Leith, but 50355 (as delivered, renumbering was in 1984) itself was allocated to Llandudno Junction when new in September 1957. Always a LM allocated vehicle, it was a familiar sight at Preston in my youth. Formal withdrawal came from Newton Heath depot, Manchester, in June 1989 though it had been out of use since the March. It had been scrapped by Vic Berry, Leicester, by October 1990.
