CLASS 158: The 90mph air-conditioned 2- and 3-car class 158 'Express' sets were the ultimate in BR second generation DMU, replacing loco-hauled trains on many longer distance routes across the country. They entered service in September 1990, and Haymarket (Edinburgh) depot received the first deliveries. They have been a familiar sight in Scotland ever since. 182 units were built, 17 as 3-cars (originally for Trans-Pennine routes) but others have operated as 3-cars by splitting 2-car sets. The final ten were delivered to West Yorkshire PTE. There were three engine options, 158701-158814 comprising the main fleet.
This photo shows 158751 negotiating the Edinburgh Suburban line at Blackford on a glorious 4th June 1994. It was one of a small fleet (158747-751) that, for a time, were subleased to InterCity and it is likely that this is a North West - Scotland IC service.
