66740 1M16 INV 29/01/17
GBRf opted for re-engineered class 73/9s for the Caledonian Sleeper contract, north of Edinburgh. Problems arose with vibration from the alternators when running at full power. Availability was compounded by collision damage to 73969, and the need to fit Dellner couplers and check compatibility with the new Mark V stock. The end result was the first appearance of class 66s on scheduled passenger trains. Here we see 66740 at Inverness on 29th January 2017, with 73966 behind providing the heat - required! - for the 1M16 2026 Inverness - Euston. From the following day, the Inverness portion reverted to class 67 haulage. A lucky escape for my trip to sample a class 66 on the Highland Mainline!
