CLASS 144: The 144s combined Alexander bodies with BREL underframes and were built new for West Yorkshire PTE. The sets have been based at Neville Hill for all their lives, from introduction in late 1986. 23 2-car sets were constructed, the last ten later lengthened to three coaches featuring the only ten intermediate 'Pacer' cars. As with the other fleets, they were re-engineered in the 1990s losing their Leyland/Self Changing Gears transmission for Cummins/Voith equipment, with consequent improvement in reliability.
3-car 144021 is seen at Leeds in the original 'maroon and buttermilk' livery. They later carried the Regional Railways scheme, before a second red and grey iteration of 'Metro' livery and, most recently, the standard 'Northern' colours.
